It Starts With a Question

What is love? We’ve all been asked that question. We’ve all asked that question. And we all have tried to answer that question.

This post has been taken from my other blog whose link can be found at the end of this article.

There is definitely no right or wrong answer because the answer to that question depends on the person answering.
There may be stupid sounding answers but nobody’s complaining anyway. Most of the time, we answer using our own experiences or how we want to experience love. Some of the time we adhere to what the world defines is love. For example, in the merriam-webster dictionary, love is:
a (1) : strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties <maternal love for a child> (2) : attraction based on sexual desire : affection and tenderness felt by lovers (3) : affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests <love for his old schoolmates>
As you can see, they categorized love in 3 different areas: maternal love, sexual love and phileal love. We will not discuss all of them here. Bring into mind that I am focusing on relationships with the opposite sex and how to become what they call a “Proverbs 31 wife/husband”. So I will expound more on what love is according to the bible.

LOVE: agape. Noun. It can be used to denote a person’s love for God, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 John 2:15), God’s love for humanity “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8), and God’s love for Jesus “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commansa, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.” (John 15:9-10)
*Nelson’s Biblical Cyclopedic Index

That is just one definition of biblical love among thousands. But the core of the meaning is the one verse that we may even have used to define love itself:
God is love” 1 John 4:8
You see, the whole of the bible is just one very long love letter from God to us, from a lover to the beloved. When you read the bible, you are reading a letter from a God who loves us so much that He wrote down everything we need to know not just to survive, but to live a full life.

Understanding this is the first step into the kind of relationship you have never dared to dream of. Understanding that there is a bigger LOVE out there grounds us into reality. And this reality is not like most where we wake up in the morning with sunken eyes and a wary heart knowing that ‘reality’ fell down on our ‘love’ again. No, this reality is a releasing experience where we wake up each morning excited to know how this Great Lover of ours will fulfill our wildest dreams.

When you finally open your eyes and accept this kind of love, a love that can never be surpassed, you allow yourself to enter into a relationship of protection, provision and constant companion. You don’t need to keep looking for substitute relationships to fill that gaping hole (will discuss that in another post) in your heart. You are complete even before you find your lifetime partner. You are the best version of you and finding the person God has prepared for you will only be added value in your life.

Think of it this way: When we were younger, we were told that we should close our eyes when people are kissing each other. We were told that it was bad to watch kissing scenes. When we got a bit older, we found ourselves peeking into those scenes and realizing that it’s not all that bad. Now that we are older (and wiser I hope) we know that kissing is not bad at all. The point is we believed in one definition when we were younger and we lived in that belief for a long time before we realized it was a bit lopsided. We have to step out of that comfort zone and study what we really want to know.

My challenge is this: Let go of the things that you’ve been holding on to for a long time. Let God open your eyes to something more beautiful than what you already have. And let yourself experience the kind of love that was meant for us to experience.

Welcome to the best ride of your life!
